CAN I ORDER A TRAVEL BIKE THAT BREAKS DOWN FOR PACKING INTO AN AIRLINE REGULATION SIZE SUITCASE?
WHY CAN’T I HAVE A TRAVEL BIKE WITH INTERNAL ROUTING AND FLAT MOUNT BRAKE CALIPERS?
We know that bikes and travel go well together, and that is why S&S Couplers are an available upgrade option for all REN production frames or a custom option on Bespoke Frame orders.
PLEASE NOTE:
— Only electronic shift systems are compatible with internal routing on frames with S&S Couplers.
— Internal routing of rear brake lines or mechanical derailleur cables are not available options on travel bike orders. S&S Couplers require that the entire bike — both the frame and all connecting component or accessory parts — be physically separated into two sections, meaning that any mechanical or hydraulic components that span from the front to the rear of the bike require an integrated splitter of some type to be compatible.
— Mechanical disc brakes and shifting components require housing stops to create a length of exposed cable for installing a cable splitter, and there is no good way to put stops inside a frame without adding significant expense and compromising brake performance.
— Hydraulic disc brakes and shifting components are sealed systems that cannot be dis- and re-assembled for packing without numerous tools, fluids, and small parts.
— For maximum ease of use we strongly recommend ISO brake mounts with standard Post Mount calipers for all travel bikes. This brake configuration includes a caliper adapter that maintains caliper position relative to the frame and is the only way to unbolt a rear brake caliper for packing and have it go back on in the exact same position without requiring adjustment. Flat Mount calipers and frame mounts, and Post Mount calipers and frame mounts both require that the caliper be re-centered on the rotor every time the bike is re-assembled.
— Any retrofits on production frames will add several weeks to the delivery date. Please contact us for current pricing and details.
